I shoot street, event, travel and documentary photography. I shoot the feel of place via a number of techniques. I’ve been a photographer for a little over 10 years, and have adapted an approach heavily influenced by street photographers over the last fifty years-some communication with subjects where necessary, but I’m not looking to disturb the scene I’m photographing. But I’m close. I’m in the action at all times, and have come to believe that to shoot truly well, a photographer must trust themselves in the moment in tight quarters, like a boxer that’s a fly on the wall at the same time. I shoot either a 25mm or 35mm lens as close to my subjects as I can be with a top mounted flash and sometimes with a secondary hand held flash, giving my stories a hyper real feel.
I don’t blend in. On the contrary, I stand out. With lights blazing, there’s really no other way. But I’m so intensely committed to shooting in my own style that individuals or groups open up in a way that only happens when people trust one another.
I think that photography done best occurs when an individual can truly open themself to a moment or a place or a person. By way of making myself vulnerable photo subjects find it easier to allow themselves to be seen. Vulnerability reflects and cameras deftly wielded are tools for grabbing and holding these exchanges between people and place.
